Coconut trees are native to Jamaica and a wonderful crop for our Afternoon Farming project.
Children from the Boston Beach community were given the opportunity to plant and care for their own tree. In this case, it was a coconut tree! The kids were overjoyed at this opportunity as many of them had never planted a tree before. Of course there were a chosen some who whined and complained at the heat and the heavy lifting (mostly the girls) but overall everyone was quite pleased at this Tree Planting experiment. Questions like, "how much water to put in?", "how long will it take?" and "is this really where coconuts come from?" rang out like bird song on this sunny evening. Planting trees are good for the environment and a great hobby for kids too!
