Art therapy is form of psychotherapy which involves creative thinking, free self-expression through painting, drawing and other creative expressions. Art therapy with the children this week consisted of painting canvas bags with Nishan under the breadfruit tree.
The BBCC kids seriously enjoy paint and art lessons and being able to create their own personal masterpieces. They sit and carefully choose their colors and work in silence for most of the time. It is important for children to take time out to reflect and creatively express their thoughts - this builds self confidence, creativity and helps with problem solving.

In an effort to build teamwork, responsibility and trust, guest teacher Ella was invited to lead a group of the smaller children through a series of Trust exercises.
This Trust session included exercises that utilized the help and support from others in order to successfully complete each exercise. With Ella's careful instructions, the children were placed in groups and allowed to participate in a series of trust exercises. This Trust exercise was followed by an educational movie which the kids thoroughly enjoyed. Another day well spent at the BBCC. See you next time :) Our BBCC Fun Day held in March 2018 was a huge success!
Thanks to excellent team work, artists and friends who donated their time and skill - we were able to pull off a successful day of fun activities that everyone enjoyed. Members of the community were invited to a free day of fun activities that the whole family can enjoy. Thanks to local carpenter and artist, the toys were designed and custom made to order then hand-painted by artists. The children had a blast with so many activities and games to choose from and so did we. Children from the Boston Beach Culture Center were taught the many benefits of planting their own plant fruit and vegetable trees thanks to resident farmer and herbs man, Backra.
The kids were taught how to identify different plants and their benefits . This was followed by a hands on demonstration on how to plant your own trees which the kids thoroughly enjoyed. Planting seeds is a fun activity for kids of all ages! Coconut trees are native to Jamaica and a wonderful crop for our Afternoon Farming project.
Children from the Boston Beach community were given the opportunity to plant and care for their own tree. In this case, it was a coconut tree! The kids were overjoyed at this opportunity as many of them had never planted a tree before. Of course there were a chosen some who whined and complained at the heat and the heavy lifting (mostly the girls) but overall everyone was quite pleased at this Tree Planting experiment. Questions like, "how much water to put in?", "how long will it take?" and "is this really where coconuts come from?" rang out like bird song on this sunny evening. Planting trees are good for the environment and a great hobby for kids too! Did you know learning to play an instrument can help children to fine-tune their ear and enhance skills needed for education and social interaction? "By understanding beat, rhythm, and scales, children are learning how to divide, create fractions, and recognize patterns. Hands on music education rewires a child's brain to help them better understand other areas of math," says Lynn Kleiner, founder of Music Rhapsody in Redondo Beach, CA. Afternoon care lessons with the BBCC usually involves some sort of reading, math or brain exercise work. We incorporate educational lessons in all our interactions with kids from the community. These lessons help to boost the children's confidence in tackling new problems with a positive attitude and the reassurance that there is individual help if they need it. Our classroom is located outdoors with tables, papers, yoga mats and enthusiastic kids actually excited about doing their homework. We support educational empowerment of all youth! |
